About

About

An English-language reference to where Vietnam’s globally important products come from, how they are made, and how they reach the rest of the world.

What this is

VietnameseOrigins documents the origins of products that Vietnam grows and makes for the world: the provinces they come from, the plants behind them, how they are harvested, processed and graded, how they compare with alternatives, and how they are traded. It is organised as an atlas — product, region, process, comparison — rather than as a stream of articles.

Why it exists

Much of what English-speaking readers find about these products comes from shopping pages, forum threads and exporters’ blogs. The best evidence — Vietnamese technical guidance, trade statistics, standards, botanical references and scientific papers — is scattered, often in Vietnamese, and rarely put side by side. We put it side by side, in English, with the sources visible.

What it covers

We began with cinnamon and star anise, where Vietnam’s role is central and well documented, then added cashew, which Vietnam shells and exports for the world. Black pepper and rice are in research. Coffee is covered by our specialist site,VietnameseIced.coffee.

What it does not claim

  • We are not a newsroom and have no correspondents in Vietnam.
  • We have not visited the farms or regions described, tasted the products or tested samples.
  • We do not sell products, and no producer or exporter pays for coverage.
  • We do not give health advice.

How it is researched

Topics are chosen from research into what people search for, then written from the strongest sources we can find, each classed and dated. The full process is on the methodology page; the research behind our choices is summarised on the research page; every source we use is listed on the sources page.
